Group Intervention

Tween group (ages 10-12)

Our tween group focuses on the early lessons of social thinking. Social thinking is what we do when we interact with people: we think about them. And how we think about people affects how we behave, which in turn affects how others respond to us, which in turn affects our own emotions (www.socialthinking.com). This group learns about good social skills which involves more than direct language-based interactions. They explore sharing space with others, thinking about others in the shared environment, and learning to regulate one’s own behaviour to other people’s thoughts and expectations. Within these social lessons include self-regulation, emotional regulation, anger management and an introduction to hygiene and puberty. The tween group is a small with a maximum of 6 members, who all benefit from the reciprocal learning environment of the group. Each week parents are provided with a summary of the social lesson learned that day; giving parents the opportunity to engage in conversation with their tween about the ideas taught, and empowering their tween to generalize the concepts learned to other environments outside of T&K.

Teen Group (ages 13-19)

The T&K teen group learns from the concepts of social thinking. Social thinking is what we do when we interact with people: we think about them. And how we think about people affects how we behave, which in turn affects how others respond to us, which in turn affects our own emotions (www.socialthinking.com). Transitioning and learning about the challenges of high school is a common topic in our teen group lessons. Teens spend ample time working on conversation and communication skills, community and life skills, pre-employment and adult transitioning. Each week parents are provided with a summary of the social lesson learned that day; giving parents the opportunity to engage in conversation with their teen about the ideas taught, and empowering their teen to generalize the concepts learned to other environments outside of T&K.

Young Adult Group (ages 19-24)

Young adults face many challenges transitioning from adolescence to adulthood. This group focuses on the specific skills needed to successfully move into adulthood including anger management, emotional awareness, pre-employment, dating, functional life skills, and adaptive functioning skills to name a few. Each week parents/caregivers are provided with a summary of the social lesson learned that day; giving them the opportunity to engage in conversation with their young adult about the ideas taught, and empowering them to generalize the concepts learned to other environments outside of T&K.
